A Giant Mess

The Giants are coming back to Liverpool!  Hurray!  Royal de Luxe's spectacular puppets will be walking the streets of the city for the last time, creating a fascinating entertainment experience.  That's brilliant news, isn't it?  Tourists everywhere, fantastic images on the news, a superb showcase for the city region.

And of course Merseyrail will be getting behind it.  As the region's main transport provider, they'll be straight in there to help get people around won't they?  The answer is yes, they will, but if you want to do anything else - tough.

Yesterday Merseyrail sneaked out a little tweet.

Wait... what?

With two weeks to go, Merseyrail announced a swathe of changes that'll severely damage the service.  The West Kirby and New Brighton lines lose a train an hour, going from four to three.  All the Wirral Line trains heading south will terminate at Hooton, with a shuttle service heading to Chester.  Ellesmere Port trains won't run.  Southport line trains will terminate at South Parkway.  They've culled and chopped to try and get the trains as full and on time as possible.

But that's not the worst part.  The worst part is the station closures.  On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, nearly 30 stations will be simply closed.  That's it.  No trains will call and no staff will be provided.  You can find the full list here.  Basically whole swathes of the Northern and Wirral lines will become inaccessible as Merseyrail concentrates on running fast trains to get people to the Giants.  Just the Giants.  Nothing else matters.

It's a shockingly reduced service throughout the whole region.  To give you an idea of some of the worst parts, I've turned to Google Maps.

This is the eastern side of the Wirral.  Running through the centre, you can see the railway line, with five stations.  The middle three - Port Sunlight, Spital and Bromborough Rake - will all be closed that weekend.  Look at the land around it - that's a lot of homes and businesses that are losing their regular rail service.  Arbitrarily.  Suddenly.

Here's the north of the Wirral.  Hoylake, on the far left, will be open, as will Moreton on the far right.  Meols and Manor Road in the middle, though, will be closed.

Ormskirk will remain open, but those two stations at Town Green and Aughton Park will close - leaving those two villages without any train service at all.

It continues along those lines everywhere.  Bache - handy for Chester University and the Countess of Chester Hospital - closed.  Conway Park - a station specifically built to serve the shops of Birkenhead town centre - closed.  Capenhurst - basically the only public transport to the huge industrial plant - closed.  Bootle Oriel Road - where most of the town's offices are located - closed.  In Liverpool, James Street and Lime Street on the loop will be closed, with Wirral Line services only calling at Central and Northern Line services only calling at Moorfields.  Need to get a London train?  Hope you enjoy schlepping across the city centre with your luggage.

Worst of all is poor old Hightown.  This village on the Sefton coast has a station with a four trains an hour service running through it.  On the weekend of the Giants, it won't get anything at all.  Take a quick look at the satellite view of Hightown.

The railway is basically the only way out of the village.  If you've not got a car, you're staying there all weekend.

It's a horrible mess, and it kneecaps thousands of Merseyside residents for no reason other than "performance statistics".  There will be a single replacement bus service, for the residents of Ellesmere Port, after the local MP objected to plans to just not run any trains on that branch at all.  Yep, Merseyrail's original plans were to deprive a town of 55,000 of its regular rail services, and it was only when a politician intervened that they grumblingly did something about it.

The Giants Spectacular is a huge event, absolutely.  But it's not the only thing happening.  Friday the 5th is a regular working day; people will have to get to work.  People will still want to go to Chester or Southport or Birkenhead to shop on the weekend.  People have places to go that don't involve huge puppets, and those journeys are going to be disrupted and ruined.  With two weeks' notice.

Even some of the details seem ill-thought out.  Sandhills will be closed, so if you need to change between the Ormskirk and Southport branches, you're going to have to go into Moorfields whether you like it or not.  Closing Lime Street Underground has a similar effect - making it exit only would at least take people who are just heading to, say, Manchester, off the city streets and out of Central.

And why aren't there any replacement buses?  If you're going to close stations, do it right.  Create railheads at big stations then run buses to the intermediate stops to get those passengers on board.  Make the Wirral Line Birkenhead Central - Rock Ferry - Hooton only, but have buses dropping people off in the gaps.  If you're going all the way to Liverpool, brilliant, but if you only want to get from Eastham Rake to the retail park at Spital, you can still do that. 

This all smacks of panic at Rail House, a horrible realisation that they can't cope and so they've just pulled the communication cord to try and stop the disaster.  The Giants were announced months ago; Merseyrail should've been planning for it right from the start.  Imagine if, during the Olympics, TfL had said "there will be a great service on trains to the Olympic Park, but we're closing the District Line to compensate."  It wouldn't have happened because they planned and budgeted accordingly.  Merseyrail seems to have blundered along and not done any modelling at all.  If they'd announced in, say, June, that there would disruption to the services, people could've planned ahead - you could book the Friday off work, because getting into the office would be a nightmare, for example.  It also has a negative message for people in certain parts of the region who do want to see the Giants; a kind of "West Kirby and Hoylake can go, but Meols and Birkenhead Park will have to stay at home" division.  They'll get in their cars, I suppose, because I'm sure it'll be really easy to drive to Liverpool and the park and rides at the open stations won't be full at all.

It's a mess, a horrible mess, and I sincerely hope Merseytravel take Merseyrail to task for it when it's all over.  In the meantime, spare a thought for the poor people of Hightown.

If You're Gonna Do It, Do It Right (Right)

A couple of months ago, I collected the MediaCity line with Robert.  At Pomona stop, we simply jumped off the tram, hung around the platform and then got on the next train out.  At the time, Robert queried, "does that count?"

Of course, it didn't.  The rule of this blog has always been that you exit the station.  If at all possible, you walk on to the next one, but if that's not possible then at the very least you pass through the ticket barriers and out into the street.  It's been there right since the very first post, back in 2007, when there was still hope in the world.

Pomona, therefore, had to be collected properly.  I headed back there on a sweltering hot Monday and disembarked to find a full platform.  This was a bit of a shock, as Pomona is in what experts call "the middle of nowhere".  There were half a dozen revenue protection officers ready to check the hordes of people who disembarked the tram.  And when I say "hordes" I mean "me".  I eventually found the ticket on my phone (incidentally, in all my Metrolink travels, this is the first time I've had my ticket checked) and left the stop.

Now all I needed was a sign at ground level to prove I'd actually been there.  Not that I'm saying you wouldn't believe me; if I said I'd been to Pomona again and passed through the ticket barriers I'm sure you'd accept it, because you are kind and decent people.  This was more for my completest, slightly manic frame of mind.

But as usual, Metrolink had let me down.  Not a single piece of signage with the name on it.  It's like they don't want you to know there's a tram stop there.  I was resigning myself to going back up to the platform to make an idiot of myself in front of the ticket inspectors when I spotted something unusual.

It's a cast iron post, right in the middle of the cobbles, with Metrolink Pomona Strand inscribed round the top.  I presume it's some sort of commemorative icon, perhaps to mark the opening of the branch, but there's nothing to indicate that (there's a plaque further down the line Tony Blair unveiled).  And the use of Pomona Strand (the street the stop is on) - was that the original name of the stop?

Whatever it is, it was a sign for the Metrolink right outside the stop, so it counts.

Job done.

The question was, what to do next?  I could have just boarded another tram, but that seemed like a dull idea.  Pomona's status as the spot where the new Trafford Park line branched off gave me an obvious idea - I'd walk along the route of the new line, collecting its stops before they've even been built.

Right now, of course, there's not much to see apart from a lot of building works.  The viaduct points hopefully westward, shrouded in scaffolding and tenting, ready to be extended...

...while on the ground, the landing point for the new tram ramp is coming together.

The works sent me down onto the canal towpath, not one of those scenic canal paths that Pru and Tim pass on their narrowboats, but one with overgrown bushes and a smell of urine.  The kind of canal path where people get pushed into the water, or stabbed.  I was glad to rise up onto a cobbled street, where a sign informed me Pomona Strand was private property and there was no right of way.  I wasn't feeling too welcome.

The tram line will pass under the Trafford Bridge, but I was forced up to street level, to negotiate the traffic swinging off the roundabout.  A giant LED screen flashed up adverts as I waited - girls in bikinis on holiday, laughing families, a six storey high bottle of fizzy drink.  Over the road, and back down to canalside level for the first stop: Wharfside.

This will eventually be an incredibly busy stop, as it's the closest one to Old Trafford.  For now it's just a couple of lumps of concrete as the foundations for the platform go into place.

I carried on along Trafford Wharf Road, passing office workers out for a lunchtime walk with their sandwiches.  It's still in that halfway point between "thriving city district" and "industrial park"; there's office blocks, yes, but there are also workshops, and the Imperial War Museum sits right opposite a large grain silo.

This is where the second stop on the line will be: handy for the museum, and also handy for ITV Studios.  The tv people objected to the construction of the line as they thought the rumbling of the trams would disrupt filming.  You'd think Audrey Roberts would be keen on a stop handy for work, but there you go.  You can see their point though - the recent set extension means it rubs right up against the perimeter wall, with the new Weatherfield Police Station clearly visible from the street.

The line veers away before it passes the front gates though, meaning Gail will be able to sleep without being too disturbed, and up Wharfside Way to the Village Circle roundabout.  Here was where following the route of the line started to get difficult.  Constructing a tram link is a major job, and it means significant disruption.  Metrolink have concentrated on keeping cars flowing, which means if you're a pedestrian, you're sort of shoved to one side.  To cross the roundabout I found myself being sent back and forth, over all sorts of temporary pavements, just to reach the far side.

That'll be the site of Village tram stop.  The name "village" implies bucolic living - countryside and duck ponds and tea rooms.  It couldn't be further from the reality.  Trafford village was a planned community for factory workers, laid out on numbered avenues.  It never really took off.  Unlike say, Port Sunlight, the homes were cheap and squalid, and built right at the centre of the industrial park, meaning pollution was everywhere.  Most of the homes were demolished in slum clearances.  Now "the Village" is a strip of shops for the local tradesmen - a chippy, a Greggs, a newsagent - and St Anthony's church, which somehow clings on.

Past torn up streets and one-way systems.  Signs warned motorists of disruption for months.  I dodged through fences and across traffic lights, still blinking in sequence even though the roads they guarded were closed to traffic. 

I began to wonder who would be using the Trafford Park line.  At its start and finish - the city centre and the shopping mall - yes, I could see users, but here in the middle was just acres and acres of sparse industry.  There were no residents, and hardly any pedestrians.  In my whole walk I saw a single other person on foot, a portly man who launched himself out of a row of trade units and crossed the road without looking.  I suppose people need to get to work, but so many of the factories had parking and easy road access, I couldn't see many giving up their drive for the tram.

Parkway Circle was even larger, and in an even bigger state than Village Circle.  The trams will one day sweep across the centre of the roundabout to a park and ride, but until then it was a lot of churned up tarmac and men in hi-vis outfits.  I did, at least, get my first glimpse of actual tracks, installed in the road surface already.

After what seemed like an hour of walking, I managed to get round the roundabout and onto the bridge over the canal.  The tram line will cross here on a new bridge.  Hopefully they'll upgrade the footpath at the same time, because right now it's just a wedge of pavement next to choking fumes.

There aren't actually any slow moving trains within Trafford Park any more; there used to be a freight railway which ran throughout the estate, but it was mostly lifted in the late 90s.  There's still the odd bit of rail but there are no actual trains.  The only trains now are the ones that use the massive freight terminal

I headed under the flyover and walked into the outskirts of the Trafford Centre complex.  There was a bland Holiday Inn, then the site of the next stop: Event City.  The attraction that gives it its name is a series of large white boxes, ready to host whatever corporate beano is required - "from yoga retreats to triathletes", the posters promised. 

Excitingly, there were more rails here and then, as I approached the Barton Square section of the shopping centre, I actually walked across tramlines laid into the tarmac. 

I was now approaching the terminus of the new line and - let's be honest - the main reason it was going to be built: the Trafford Centre.  Sorry, the intu Trafford Centre, as it has been optimistically rebranded; there isn't a single person alive who calls it this.

I'd never actually been to the Trafford Centre.  Opening in 1998, it's the second largest shopping centre in Britain (after the MetroCentre in Gateshead) and it had a reputation in the North West as the hub of everything worth buying.  People talked about it in excited tones; entire days out were planned to get the most of it.  I'd not avoided it, I'd just never got round to going.  They are, let's be honest, not that interested in people who don't have cars.  Pedestrians can't load their arms with shopping, and there's only so much you can carry on the bus.  You need a car to be able to take proper advantage of the shopping opportunities.

Which is, of course, why it's taken them twenty years to send a tram line this way.  Some claim that there should've been a tram line here on opening, but the developers backed out of paying for it; I certainly can't believe you'd get away with building such a huge shopping centre without some kind of fixed rail link today. 

I wiped away the worst of the sweat and entered the centre where tram passengers will be deposited: by Selfridges.  Immediately there was the sweet needles of ice cold air conditioning, a cool breeze sweeping over me and chilling me delightfully.  After an hour of walking in the midday sun, it was unbelievably welcome, and I wandered through the store in something of a daze.  Finally I emerged on the far side, in the mall itself, and an enormous grin spread across my face.

I'd known that the Trafford Centre had lofty ideals.  It wasn't just a shopping centre, it was an experience, and they'd spent a considerable amount of money constructing it.  What I hadn't realised was quite how naff it was.

There is a certain kind of person who keeps their television in a cabinet.  You don't get them so much now TVs are a centimetre thick and can hang on the wall, but when they were bulky and deep, the cabinets were common.  People had a room that'd been designed to look a particular way, and a glass and plastic cube didn't fit in with the design.  From the outside it's designed to look like a Chippendale; dark wood and brass hinges, concealing the electronics inside.  Look closer though and you realise that the design of the cabinet is modern too; it's not just a box, it's got a special shelf so you can pull the TV out, and there's a cable tidy space, and a spot for your satellite box.  It's as modern as the bunch of electronics you're trying to conceal, and probably not as well made, and to be honest it's just a load of faff because every time you want to watch EastEnders you have to open it all up again.  It's pointless kitsch.

The Trafford Centre was designed by and for people who kept their televisions in cabinets.  It's a temple to shopping and commerce and naked, unbridled, consumerism, but that's all a bit vulgar.  So they've designed it to look like a Venetian palace.  It's covered in marble and frescos; there are ornate pillars and statues. 

Everything is designed as though it is a classy, elegant place of beauty while at the same time being a place where you can buy trainers and computer games and perfume and anything else you could possibly want.  It's for people who really like spending money as a hobby but want to pretend they don't.  It's for people who think the Arndale is common because it's got strip lights and white walls. 

It's not all Venetian.  There are two avenues of restaurants.  One is New Orleans themed, one is Chinese themed, and they lead up to the food court and cinema.  The food court is just...  I mean, let's be kind and say it's "ocean liner" themed, and not based around a certain ship which sank in 1912 and was the subject of a very popular film around the time the centre opened, because that would just be too tacky.

I headed for the "Grand Hall" at the rear, where a large set of steps and a chandelier guided me down to a Costa Coffee and a Five Guys.  I got an iced drink and sat down. 

The weird part is, it's simultaneously over the top and not over the top enough.  This is, after all, just a shopping centre; it doesn't need all the gubbins.  MetroCentre manages without it.  So does Meadowhall.  They're just long avenues with shops and that's fine for me.  The shops are the main attraction.

At the Trafford Centre, they've spent a huge amount of money to try and make the shopping centre something more.  But they haven't gone far enough.  As I walked around, I was reminded of Las Vegas.  I went there years ago, and I stayed in a hotel that was King Arthur themed.  I had breakfast in a pyramid.  I had dinner under the Eiffel Tower.  You could take a gondola ride in a recreated Venetian canal, or watch a volcano erupt (three times a night).  It was huge and ludicrous and over the top. 

The Trafford Centre is big and awful, but it's not big and awful enough.  It's not a massive ridiculous experience.  It's a shopping mall with a bit of marble.  It's a few decorative touches.  It's a cabinet around a telly.

I took the footbridge across to Barton Square, an extension opened in 2006.  This was to have been the homeware quarter - a district of high end furniture retailers.  It was a flop, and after an attempt to make it more of a tourist attraction with a Lego experience and an aquarium, the owners have admitted defeat.  It's going to be turned into a giant Primark.

It was a reminder that the Trafford Centre was the last gasp of this kind of retail experience.  A decade later, Liverpool One revitalised a city centre and redefined what a shopping mall should look like.  Since then, the big developments - the Westfields in London, for example - have been in the middle of town, not isolated on the edge of the city.  Right now in 2018 you can order anything you like and have it delivered to your door.  If you're going to get up and go shopping, you want it to be somewhere a bit interesting and lively.  You want to go into town.

The Trafford Centre is still incredibly popular, of course, and it's always handy to have loads of free parking and plenty of shops close to one another.  I did wonder, though: once the Trafford Park line is built, how many people will drive here to catch their tram into Manchester, or MediaCity, or Old Trafford?  How many people will use this as one enormous, fake Baroque park and ride? 

I headed back to New Orleans, past the car that belonged to the mother of the centre's first owner ("as a lasting tribute for all her support inspiration and guidance") and into the Wetherspoon's.  I know we should be boycotting them because they are owned by an absolutely horrible man, but the app that lets you order your drinks without going to the bar?  Absolute genius.

The Trafford Park line is due to open in 2020.  I've seen where it's going.  I don't think I'll need to go back.

Regular readers (hello you!) may be able to reach right back into their memory banks and remember that when I started collecting Metrolink tram stops, I began with the Bury line.  I was still filled with enthusiasm and joie de vivre then.  Collecting tram stops is enormous fun! I'd thought.  Why, I almost did this whole line in one session!

The truth is, the stops are so close together, and the trams are so frequent, it's not really a challenge.  If you timed it right you could probably do the whole network in a day.  Back then, I didn't realise this; I thought I was just so keen I'd overstepped the mark.  I concluded with this:
I decided that the next tram stop, Whitefield, would be my last of the day.  That left two at the end of the Bury line flailing around uncollected, which is annoying, but gives me a reason to come back.  I always like a reason to come back.
Which is true.  But two stops is annoyingly tiny.  It's a long way to go for not much reward.  So it's not much of a surprise that it took me a whole year to get round to finally visiting Radcliffe stop. 

I went out the back exit, with the ramps for the disabled, because there was a gentleman in not quite the right frame of mind stood by the exit stairs and talking loudly to himself.  As with most of the stops on the Bury line, Radcliffe used to be a railway station, and its big ugly building spoke of British Rail economies and Three Day Week cutbacks.

I was curious about the grey patch above the entrance.  It looked like a sign that had been covered up - perhaps the remnant of a previous corporate identity.  A little googling revealed a far sadder truth.  It was a piece of artwork, From The Tower Falls the Shadow, by the Brass Art group and installed in 2008.  There should've been bright blue neon shining out over the car park but it wasn't turned on.  Maybe it's because it was daytime, and they were saving the drama for the night, but it was a shame I couldn't see it.

I headed for the Bury Road, avoiding Radcliffe itself.  I don't think I missed much.  Certainly the bits of town I saw lacked appeal.  I don't think it's a sign of an area on the up when the gates to the East Lancashire Paper Mill don't form the entrance to a large place of employment, but are instead a bit of dressing for a patch of parkland. 

There were open stretches of bare land, and small dark houses with peeling wooden window frames.  The school seemed to be mainly for Bury's problem children.  The Kwik Fit's sign was at least one, maybe two, corporate logos ago, and had almost faded to nothing in the sunshine.  An end of terrace house with weeds growing up through the paving slabs and overflowing wheelie bins outside had been converted into a "health club".  The windows were covered up and a sign on the side advertised "24 hour health and massage".  It did not look wholesome.  I wouldn't go asking for the employees' BSc Sports Therapy certificates, put it that way.

The further away from Radcliffe proper I got, the more things started to pick up.  The homes became a bit more cared for, the gardens tidier.  Garages and industrial units, including one belonging to Cocklestorm Fencing, which (a) is a great name and (b) has a really groovy logo; it's like Cocklestorm: The Fencing Firm Who Shagged Me.

I was by now sweating profusely.  That morning, before I'd left the house, it had absolutely hammered down with blissful rain.  It was the storm we'd been waiting for, and there'd been another on my way over to Manchester.  The problem was the period between the rainstorms, when it was a continuation of the thick, uncomfortable heat we've been enduring for a month.  The skies were grey but I could feel every ray from the sun.  I'd worn layers, in case it rained, but not a jacket, because it was hot, and now I was a ball of perspiration.  My t-shirt was starting to feel sodden around my armpits and stomach; my hair clung to my forehead. 

There were semis now, and the odd new development of boxy houses.  One home had set up a bowl of water on the front, with Doggy Pit Stop scratched into a paving slab beside it.  Then a garden centre, the true sign of middle class infiltration, and I was looking across to Bealey's Weir in the River Irwell. 

It becomes a little less picturesque when you realise it was built to serve a bleach works. 

The Bury Road turned into the Radcliffe Road as I crossed the border between the towns.  There was a row of shops, the sandwich shop already attracting lorry drivers, the chip shop next door advertising English Fish and Chips.  Ahead of me was a tiny little pensioner in slacks and an orange baseball cap.  She paused for a moment, reached into her shopping trolley, and tipped a handful of Minstrels into her hand to keep her going for the rest of the walk. 

It was a fair old walk from one tram stop to the next.  There's been vague talk about putting another one inbetween, to act as a park and ride, but there's not really the population to support it.  It's one of those bits of Metrolink where its railway origins are really clear.

I'd reached the edge of the town centre now, the district of Fishpool.  There were tight straight streets of houses.  On the front step of one of them was a small girl, perhaps about five, wearing a flowery pink dress and a furry backpack.  She reached inside it and pulled out a huge book, seemingly twice the size of her, laid it on her lap and began to read.  It was delightful.  I was ready to say hello to her as I passed, grinning, but she was utterly engrossed in her book and didn't pay me any attention at all.  Which is all the better.

I don't get that.  "It's Buzz, not Bus".  What is?  The radio station?  It's got a buzz about it?  Or is it some sort of local in-joke - is that how they pronounce Bus in Bury?  I spent a good few minutes mulling it and I couldn't come to any conclusions.  If you've got a clue, please leave a comment below. 

I'd arrived close to the famous Bury Market, one of those places you hear about when you live in the north.  Apparently it's a very good one?  I'm not a market fan.  I was put off by trips to them as a child, the indoor market in the Luton Arndale with its persistent stench of fish, or the one at the Purley on a Thursday where my mum would take us to buy white sport socks.  Birkenhead Market, too, has a reputation for being a real draw, but I still don't get it.  Can you not just go to a shop?

In fairness to Bury, I'd not arrived on a proper market day, and so there was only the indoor hall to look round.  And I had to admit some of it looked appealing.  Katsouris Delicatessen, for example, offered up a properly tempting array of meats and cheeses and pastries; in fact, most of the food stalls looked appealing.  There was an array of black pudding sellers too, Bury being legendary for its blood sausage (there's a story that the locals have abnormally high iron levels because of their black pudding consumption).  But the rest of it was just a market - card shops, phone unlockers, stalls selling dirt cheap clothes fresh from the Far East, tiny cafes selling tea and bacon.  Bigger, perhaps, than you'd expect for a town this size, but still nothing special as far as I could see.

I passed from there into the Mill Gate Shopping Centre, mainly because I needed the loo.  It had been decorated with quotes from local famous names.  Danny Boyle, who was from Radcliffe, had "it's a good place when all you have is hope and no expectations," outside the disabled toilet, while above the hand dryers in the men's loo was "Stop pouting.  Stop shouting.  You know I pulled a muscle when I did that grouting," which is from The Ballad of Barry and Freda by my spiritual leader, Victoria Wood.  I wonder if she'd mind being commemorated in the gents' toilets?  Bury actually has plans for a far more appropriate tribute to its famous daughter, in the form of a statue; the design of it is... not to my taste.  It's not so much "much-loved comedy genius", more "background character in a Wallace & Gromit."  But it's nice that people care enough to memorialise her.  I shall probably come back when it's put up to pay homage to the woman who shaped my sense of humour more than any other.

The shopping centre itself was a standard small town arcade - a little bit scruffy round the edges, pound shops in amongst the standard high street fare.  There was a curious Japanese store, Kenji, selling the kind of tiny trinket I could fill every drawer of my house with.  Sticky notes shaped like cartoon cats, tiny pencil sets, notebook after notebook after notebook; I had to flee before I spent a fortune on pointless tchotckes just because they were adorable.  They have two other stores in the north west, but fortunately nothing yet on Merseyside.

I left the arcade by a coffee shop, which styled itself as a glamorous hang out with hand made sandwiches, but also went by the gloriously Northern name of Bap, and walked into Bury's more historic district.  That's Sir Robert Peel up there, another famous son, who is commemorated with a statue and, perhaps more significantly, in the name of the local Wetherspoon's.  I was actually headed for a bit of railway heritage.  The current terminus for the Bury Metrolink line isn't the town's original railway station.  That was on Bolton Street, away from the town centre.  In a rare moment of investment, British Rail laid a new branch line to send the trains to an integrated bus/rail station, which opened in 1980.  The old station was taken over by the East Lancashire Railway, who now use it as the terminus for their heritage line.

I wonder how the heritage nuts feel about the station building.  The original burned down after the war, so this new brick building was built in 1952.  I love it, the simplicity and the practicality, and especially the clock tower.  I can imagine it annoying the kind of person who wants a day trip on a steam train though.  They want a honeysuckle-covered cottage building, with a waiting room with a fireplace and room for a parcel office and a porter.  Not Festival of Britain chic.  Perhaps Victoria Wood was on my mind, or perhaps there's a quote of hers that's suitable for every occasion, but I thought back to her peerless Great Railway Journey where the passengers are forced to use a genuine 1930s buffet car.  "It's not very popular with the nostalgia buffs, because it doesn't conform to the red plush, gas light, pea souper idea of the steam era."

It was closed on a Monday, of course, because apparently nothing happens in Bury on a Monday.  So was the accompanying transport museum.  I wasn't too sad.  I've talked at length on this blog about my steam train ambivalence; they're just like normal trains, except slower, dirtier, more expensive, more uncomfortable, and rarely going anywhere you actually want to go.  The East Lancashire Railway goes from Bury to Heywood, a very minor industrial town whose main claim to fame seems to be that it's the birthplace of both Julie Goodyear and Lisa Stansfield.  There are plans to extend it further so it reaches Castleton, on the edge of Rochdale; looking back over the blog I discover that when I reached Castleton I was mainly shocked by how many dog turds were on the pavement.  Book your tickets now!

There's also the slight discomfort with steam railways that the people who like them are harking back to the good old days a bit too much, and that if you prodded them they'd tell you how the Mallard took them back to when you could say queer and buy golliwogs and there was none of this politically correct Common Market forcing you to eat tapas instead of Yorkshire pudding and when we're free of it all we'll bring back the farthing.  I don't really want to hang out in that kind of environment. 

I headed back into town for my tram.  I'm not too happy with the fact that Bury is only accessible via a relatively slow tram from Manchester or a heritage railway that only runs a few days a week.  I feel like it deserves more.  Being entirely cut off from the Network Rail map feels wrong for a town with this history and local importance.  (Although full disclosure, I continually confuse Bury and Bolton and Blackburn).  The tram should be in addition to a proper railway line into town, as at Rochdale or Ashton or Eccles.

It would've been quicker to just show you this picture.  Note that it's called Bury Interchange on the signs, but Metrolink calls it simply Bury everywhere else.  This is the kind of inconsistency that really irritates me.

Inside it still feels like a railway station, and a surprisingly urban one at that.  There's a ticket hall with another piece of neon artwork, though this one, From Northern Soul (Bury Neon) was actually turned on. 

I took the steps down to the platform; its position in a cutting gave it an almost subway feel. 

Collecting Radcliffe and Bury finishes off the last of Metrolink's branches.  I've now visited every tram stop with the exception of those in the City Zone and, obviously, the stops on the under construction  Trafford Park line.  I should've waited until 2020 for those, but I had a different idea...
