Day Four: Losing Faith

I am, in many ways like a shark.  Not least because I have horribly sharp teeth and a strong dislike for Roy Scheider.  I need to keep moving at all times.  If I stop I tend to get weary.  My daily dose of drugs has a side effect of extreme tiredness; it's a rare day when I don't have to have at least one little nap.  If I can distract myself long enough and push through it I'm ok, but it'll get me in the end; after I got back from this Cumbria trip I was basically comatose for three days.

The net effect of my wait at Nethertown, despite Tina Fey's encouragement, was a certain lethargy.  My brain was a bit fuzzy and loose.  My carefully planned schedule - now a little wad of papier mache in my trouser pocket - called for me to stop at Corkickle, a request stop, and then walk into Whitehaven.  I felt lazy.  I felt tired.  I couldn't be bothered asking for the train to stop, so I thought, I'll just reverse it.  I'll walk back from Whitehaven to Corkickle.


Some of the other passengers weren't so lazy, though, and as the train stopped at Corkickle anyway, I figured I'd just jump off.    It wasn't a nice stop; I was glad I'd be walking away from it, rather than towards it.  Another single platform, another bricked up ticket office.


A man with an animal that might have been a dog, might have been a small dinosaur, got off ahead of me.  It snuffled and growled its way through the exit, so I gave it plenty of time to depart before I took my photo.


The road into town passed Whitehaven Castle - a disappointment.  I want turrets!  I want towers!  If you haven't got a moat, get the hell out.  It looked like a particularly dull stately home, one that had been converted into an office building in the 1970s.


My eyelids were still drooping.  A dose of caffeine would be necessary.  There was a McDonalds by a supermarket, so I negotiated the drive thru entrance (they really weren't keen on customers sitting inside) and got myself one of their abominable coffees.  (I also got myself a Quarterpounder; it would have been rude not to).  McDonalds' coffee is so bad it's actually awe-inspiring - the idea that a company that big, with that much money, can't make a single cup of coffee taste better than Aldi's "Sweepings off the Factory Floor" Range.  It's like hot water poured over clay, then run through a sieve to remove anything approximating flavour.  This cup of filth's only virtue is the caffeine levels; they're somewhere just below toxic waste.

My coffee break gave the skies enough time to gather their forces again.  Wave after wave of heavy rain slammed against the window, while the winds ripped the door out of the hand of an old lady nipping in for a tea.

I braved the swells again to follow the road downhill, pausing only to snap a picture of a curious water fountain.  Apparently the man and his dog emerging from the stone wall are "literally stepping out of the past to meet us."  Preparing to drag us back with them into their hell, more like.


Still, Whitehaven was very pretty.  The town sprang up in the 17th and 18th centuries on the back of coal mining in the nearby hills; the port was created to ship it around the country.  It means it has a genteel, Georgian air to its architecture, with pleasingly symmetrical houses and carved flourishes on sills and pediments.


In the centre, the town's shopping centre seemed busy and pleasingly diverse.  The architects had adapted to the existing buildings, rather than slapping a corporate look over a perfectly adequate building.  Next time you're on a high street, look above the ground floor, and you'll often see a wealth of attractive features that have been ignored so they can install a giant illuminated Ladbrokes sign.


I passed The Rum Story, "the world's 1st exhibition depicting the Story of Rum", but wasn't tempted inside.  I don't like rum.  It's too fragrant for me - it hits your nose long before it reaches the back of your throat.  If it had been The Vodka Story or, better still, The Jack Daniels And Coke Story, well, that would have been a different matter.


A sign board in the window of the local furniture shop advertised an upcoming production of Grease with photos of the cast in their 1950s garb.  If you thought the actors in the film were too old to play high school students, you should have seen this lot.  At least two of the T-Birds were bald, and Kenickie seemed to have just come back from his shift down the chippie.  Danny had a cigarette dangling from his mouth in the manner of a six year old who's sucked the top off a lollipop but won't let go of the stick, while Sandy wasn't so much "innocent naif" as "terrifying stage school princess ready to consume your soul with her semi-professional gnashers".  In short, it looked like a must see.  (It couldn't be any worse than my school production, where they couldn't afford to pay for the rights so they did, cough, Romeo and Juliet, with the students miming to Greased Lightning and some other random tracks and dialogue inserted just to keep the lawyers at bay.  I wasn't in that one - I did Fiddler on the Roof the following year which had proper singing and yes, my Motel was a triumph, thank you for asking).


Whitehaven's clearly seen better days, but if you squint hard enough, you can detect the beauty underneath.  On a hot summer's day I expect it's wonderful.  In most places all you'd need was a quick lick of paint.  The former bus station, sadly, has been allowed to fall into disrepair, and is now to be demolished and replaced by a block of flats.  It's been condemned as unsafe, but I'd have liked to have seen that lovely 1930s entrance preserved in some way.

If you really, really concentrate, you can just about see the sign in the middle of all that Tesco business.  It's another station that sold its soul to the supermarkets in the 1980s.  The old building and associated tracks were swept away so that the people of Whitehaven could get slightly cheaper baked beans; in return, the railway got this:


There were plans for a new transport exchange here, with a bus gyratory and maybe even a new station, but they were scrapped a couple of years ago.  A shame, as it would have made it more of a presence, rather than just this tiny cabin cowering behind a petrol station.


The station doesn't seem to have received an update since about 1985.  A sign in the car park warns that parking is "for British Rail business only"; inside another one says "invalid toilet facilities are available", which made me think they were broken, until I realised that it was invalid = disabled rather than invalid = not valid.


That deserves some kind of prize for going out of its way to be unhelpful.

Outside, there's a wide island platform.  There used to be four tracks here but various cutbacks mean that most are now gone.  You're left with a big lump of concrete and little shelter.


Once again, I was hit by a burst of accidie.  The next two stations were both request stops, and I only had time to visit one of them.  Sod it, I thought.  I'll just go to Workington and turn round and go home.


In my defence, Workington is a very nice station.  It's a proper Victorian through station which has been recently restored by Northern Rail (with some help from the Purple Gang).


I nipped out into the car park for the sign shot.  It also gives you a good view of the yellowbrick building, and how well it's been cleaned up.


Inside there's a ticket hall/waiting area which, much to my delight, was warm and dry.  I positioned myself next to a radiator to wait for my train.  It was three quarters of an hour, but I really couldn't be bothered wandering into the town to have a poke round.  Sorry Workington.  The only irritation was a pair of very jumpy automatic doors that slid open if you glanced in their direction; I was continually assaulted by unwanted wafts.

My train was closing in, and I was feeling guilty.  It just seemed rude to bypass two stations without having a look.  It was ignorant.  In my febrile imagination, I pictured them insulted, crying, wondering what they'd done to insult me.


Down on the platform, I made a quick decision.  Parton.  I'd jump off at Parton, have a pint for an hour, then get the very last train back to Barrow.


A stupid decision as it turned out.  Because Parton is quite easily one of the dumpiest places I have ever had the misfortune to linger in.


The main street lead into a cold, unwelcoming town square surrounded by ugly houses.  It was squeezed into a gap between the railway line and the hills and it was completely lacking in charm or charisma.  The playground was rusted.  The pubs were shut, possibly forever.  The war memorial was surrounded by a wall that looked like it had been built by a pensioner on his spare weekend.  A giant mural on the back of the village hall provided some colour, but seemed like the last gasp of a drowning man.  I didn't recognise this technicolor vista in the settlement before me.  The garden chairs at its foot, ready to accommodate the smokers, didn't help.


I did a couple of circuits in the hope of finding an upside to the place.  There wasn't one.


I wandered back to the station, where at least there was a shelter.  No-one cared about that either.  The steps were worn and mossy, the brickwork in desperate need of repointing.  Wonky signs were allowed to dangle precariously.


I sat in the miserable shelter, trying not to cast disapproving looks at a couple on the opposite platform who were trying to get pregnant through their clothes, and thought: how much more of this have I got?  How many more stations are there to go?  I wanted to go home.  Not to the Travelodge at Barrow, where I'd been moved rooms and was now in a repainted one that still stank of emulsion, but properly home.  I'd had enough of this.  One more day, I thought.  One more day.

Day Four: Beautiful Desolation


I have to admit; I was feeling a bit pleased with myself.  There are only four trains a day in each direction that  call at Braystones and Nethertown.  They were the immovable feast of the whole trip.  If I missed any other train, I could click and clunk and get the whole thing back on schedule somehow, but if I'd missed this particular train, I'd have been stuffed.

I got my one and only negative reaction from a conductor on the trip when I asked for the train to stop at Braystones.  I have to give kudos to Northern Rail; almost all the members of staff I spoke to on this trip were helpful, smiling and happy to oblige me with a halt at whatever Godforsaken outpost I asked for - a marked contrast from the staff on Arriva Trains Wales last year.  When I asked for a pause at Braystones, the guard visibly recoiled, like I'd asked her to do something obscene with my water bottle.


Perhaps she was just astonished that anyone would want to get off at Braystones.  I jumped down from the train onto the platform and waved my thanks as it departed.  Those steps above are nailed in place, and give you some indication of the distance between the train and the ground; "mind the gap" doesn't begin to cover it.  On other stations they'd adjust the platform height, but here - who's going to use it?


The halt - station is far too grandiose a term - is squeezed between a cliff and the beach, a single platform and a single track.  There's a shelter which, uniquely in my experience, doesn't face the track; the open entrance looks inland, so that the inhabitants get some protection from  the wind and rain coming in across the bay.

I trudged up the slope to the road.  There's not much around here; a caravan park, tin monsters lined up in rows to stare out to sea with their open front eye, and the village a little way away.  Anti-social railway fans (surely all of us) might be interested to learn that the old Station House is for sale, but don't go thinking you'll get a prime piece of real estate - it's an ugly pebble dashed cottage.


From here there was a long walk down a single track lane just to get to the main road.  There was at least a totem sign; I hadn't been confident of finding one, and I'd taken a photo with a platform sign as insurance.


Yes, the weather had turned nasty again.  Little rivers of rain streaked mud down off the fields and over the road.  Cows clustered together for warmth; aren't they meant to lie down if it rains?  Or is that earthquakes? There wasn't any traffic, just me and a tediously long and straight road.  As is my habit, I began talking to myself since there was no-one around to hear.  Little pep talks, observations, complaints.  I counted on there being a village over the next hill, and swore when it was just another dip.  The next one then.


Nethertown finally appeared.  Linguists will note that "town" means "a place where people live" and "nether" means "the unmentionable parts".  I am merely pointing this out.  The road curled between barns and farm houses.  I got a shock when I spotted a swimming pool in the back of one house, along with a Costa-del-Sol series of white arches and a built in barbecue.  I wondered how much use it ever got.


This trip really wasn't selling country living for me.  It seemed to be a string of empty cold hamlets full of ugly buildings and with nowhere to shop.  I'm no retail addict, but I'd like to be able to buy a pint of milk without a six mile walk.  Nethertown was just a series of silent houses gathered around poorly maintained tarmac.  I didn't fancy it even slightly.


This was the only sign of life in the whole place.

Finally I found the station sign, again at the end of a long road to the coast.


It has to be said, there was a real beauty to the station's isolation.  What had seemed alienating and unpleasant in a hamlet became a virtue here.


It was another single platform on a clifftop, though this time it turned its back on the sea.  There was a tunnel leading under the tracks, with a "Strictly No Entry" sign posted on it; naturally I immediately went for a look.


It was the access road to a small windswept home, barracked above the stony beach.  I couldn't imagine who would choose to live here, on the edge of nowhere.  I thought about being inside that house in November, windows rattling in a gale, the power failing, the trains silent for the day.  I'd just be waiting for the psychopath to come and put me out of misery, to be frank.


I returned to the isolated shelter to wait for my train.  Two hours here, on a clifftop, totally alone.


I'd like to say that I used the time for silent reflection.  For a spiritual awakening.  That I turned my thoughts in on myself and emerged from the peace a better person.

I didn't do that.  I put Tina Fey on my iPod and laughed.  I have her brilliant memoir Bossypants on audiobook, and it was the perfect entertainment.  A waterproof hasn't been invented that can keep you warm like happiness.  I felt a little self-conscious in laughing out loud in such an empty spot; I wondered if there was someone in that house, peering out the window, watching the idiot bent double for no apparent reason.  It is impossible not to laugh at her Sarah Palin sketch ("I can see Russia from my house!") or her thoughts on beauty regimes or the tale of her honeymoon aboard a burning cruise ship.  Having Tina Fey actually tell it, rather than just read it, made it even funnier.  If it made me look like a fool, so be it.


I actually used the steps to get on the train.  They were so rickety from lack of use, they wobbled as I clambered up, and nearly tipped me through the door.  It seemed the universe wanted me to look like an idiot that day.

Day Four: Welcome To My Nuclear Family


The more I travelled up the Cumbrian coast, the more it became clear that this was England's dumping ground.  It was where we hid all the unpleasant stuff we didn't really want to deal with.  Barrow was there, building nuclear submarines we like to pretend we haven't really got.  I boarded the train and went past fenced off industrial complexes, sewage farms, outfall pipes.  Oh yes, look to your right as you travel north and you've got those fine Lake District vistas.  From down here on the railway line, though, those fells became the barrier dividing "us" from "them".  It was as though you could do anything you like so long as you stayed on the far side of the national park.


Take Drigg as a case in point.  It's got a pretty unattractive name, I admit, but beyond that, it's just another small farming village.  So you'd think.


During the war, Drigg's position in, to use a technical phrase, "the arse-end of nowhere", meant it was perfect for an ordnance factory.  Then, when that was decommissioned, it was replaced by a "low level waste repository" - or, as it's more commonly known, a nuclear dump.


Yes, just beyond that charming pub is a vast acreage that's been filled with vats of radioactive waste for the last sixty years.  It doesn't matter, though, because it's out here, on the edge of nowhere.  I fled as quickly as possible, before my genitals fell off.


Eagle-eyed readers will have noticed a slight change in the weather since the previous day.  A storm had swept in from the Atlantic, drowning the north west and battering the coast.  Heavy rain pounded off the hood of my coat, a relentless percussive beat that was really quite annoying.


I pushed on, hardy soul that I am.  Bedraggled livestock stared at me as I passed, clearly resentful of my waterproofs.  I had to keep speeding up and slowing down so that I could get past large puddles before some oaf in a Lexus splashed me.  It was miserable and grey everywhere I looked.

Then the sci-fi turrets of Sellafield emerged from behind a hill.


It's a disconcerting feeling, watching a nuclear power plant grow larger as you approach.  I felt guilty for just looking at it, as though a bunch of MI5 agents were going to swoop in and interrogate me for carrying a camera within five miles of the reactor.


What a disappointing sign.  I was hoping for "Welcome to Seascale: England's first glow in the dark village" or "Welcome to Seascale: home of the three headed labradoodle".  Instead it just pretended to be a normal community, instead of the horrific radiation scarred nightmare I was convinced it would be.

As I advanced, it disappointed even further.  There were no mutants roaming the streets, no shelters, no sirens mounted in high up places.  There was a deserted children's playground, the swings moving of their own accord in the wind for that lazy post-apocalyptic symbolism, but I think that was more to do with the weather than parental terror over radiation burns.


It was all very ordinary.  Not even ordinary: drab.  The houses were cheap pebble dashed structures with double glazing and tarmac driveways.  It was just another boring corner of the country.  There was a minor point of interest: a flag flying at half mast.


It was the morning of Margaret Thatcher's funeral, and clearly one of the residents was paying his own tribute.  I imagined a gruff Colonel Blimp type, sobbing over his Pye television in his front room; he'd retired to Seascale deliberately, as two fingers to all those nancy boy "scientists" who claimed that radiation was bad for you.

In some places, it was almost pretty - the desolate sands, the flowering dunes.  Then I'd notice the long outflow pipes stretching to the water's edge and give up any notion of a quick paddle.


I'd reached the throbbing heart of the village - a little square with a row of houses on one side.  Some of the houses had shops in their front - a butcher's, a coffee shop, a beauty salon.  It never fails to surprise me that tanning salons appear in even the smallest, poorest communities.  I have never had a tan that didn't come from the sun; I can't see the appeal in strapping myself into a dayglow coffin for five minutes so I can turn the colour of burnished teak.  I certainly wouldn't pay for the privilege.


There was also a little playground, with a "fort" for the kids to clamber over.  It featured the most inappropriate memorial I've seen in a good while.  Remember a couple of years ago, when a taxi driver ran amok with a shotgun, killing indiscriminately?  A tragedy that deserved to be memorialised, certainly.  I'm just not sure that a plaque underneath a cannon is the best place to pay tribute to people who have been shot.


Moving on from this amazing display of insensitivity, I made my way up to the railway station on top of the viaduct.  There wasn't a proper station sign that I could see; I only spotted it in the distance when I was about to board the train.  So you'll have to make do with a platform sign.


It was very dark that day.

I boarded the train across from a couple of nice ladies chatting over the aisle.  One had a security pass on a lanyard round her neck and was complaining about her morning off.  "I just used up some time off, but you can't really do anything in a morning.  You're just counting time until you head into work."

"Work" was, of course, Sellafield: the dirtiest of all the secrets along the coast.  At first everything was normal, but slowly I began to notice the changes in the landscape.  The fences became taller, harsher; they acquired a second run a metre behind the first.  They rose up on artificial embankments, like the bailey of an ancient castle.  Its purpose was much the same, to protect the valuables within from attack, but instead of jewels, it was shielding uranium cores.

I have a complex relationship with nuclear power.  On the one hand, I am anxious about anything that can obliterate thousands of people within moments, and then scar the landscape for decades afterwards: I was nine at the time of Chernobyl, after all.  It would be a lot nicer for all of us if we could get our power from solar panels, or wind turbines, or magic buttons.

However, we do need all that power, and we need more of it every day.  In the absence of dilitihium crystals, nuclear power seems the cleanest, easiest way to generate a hell of a lot of power with as little pollution as possible.  Yes, we're going to have to shove all those old plutonium rods somewhere, but that's what Drigg is for.  Besides, I don't have any kids - stuff the future generations.  (This is the point where I dearly hope there's no such thing as reincarnation).  They're all going to burn up thanks to global warming anyway so we may as well let them charge their iPods while they wait.

Also, and I realise this is appalling, but fifty years of Bond films have made me regard nuclear power as a little bit sexy and glamorous.  Thunderball wouldn't be half as interesting if Largo had stolen a boring old regular missile, and the climax of The World is Not Enough would probably have been quite dull if 007 and Renard were battling over a wind turbine instead of inside the reactor room of a Russian submarine.  Never forget: if it wasn't for nuclear power, we wouldn't have had Denise Richards as Dr Christmas Jones, saying "up here we've got hydrogen bombs your lab built leaking tritium" as though she knew what she was talking about.  I couldn't live in a world without Christmas.


In short: I am wobbly on the subject, in a very English, very woolly liberal way.  I'd really rather someone else made the decision about it frankly.

I could tell Sellafield station was getting close from the sidings - row after row of tracks with empty wagons marked BNFL.  Sellafield's presence kept this line going; the tracks were needed to ship nuclear materials back and forth, while the plant's workers commuted here from homes further along the coast.  So I guess it's sort of a good thing?

Oh I don't know.  Here's a picture of the station.


I waited for the click of a rifle, the approach of heavy footsteps, my camera snatched from my hand.  I had genuinely worried about what I would say to the nuclear police if they objected to me taking photos of the station.  I prayed they wouldn't take my memory card off me, rendering the whole trip a waste of time; equally, if they made me just delete any pics of Sellafield, I'd have a hole in the project I could never fill.


Nothing happened.  No police, no security, not even the gentle whirr of a CCTV camera turning to eyeball me.  I just left the uninspiring station behind and walked outside.


That police notice is a bit sinister though.

The plan now was a walk across country to the distant town of St Bees, a walk of several miles that would take me about three hours.  I didn't do this.  Instead, I got a lift.

The night before, the BF had unexpectedly turned up at the hotel with a bottle of wine.  Being unable to resist alcohol, I let him in, and decided to take advantage of his good nature.  The walk from Sellafield to St Bees was a long, tortuous one, and I had a real deadline.  I absolutely, positively, had to be at St Bees station by midday.  That was the only southbound train that stopped at Braystones.  I calculated it, and it looked like it was just about feasible, but after the day before's troubles, I was anxious.  If I'd miscalculated again, I didn't have another chance to collect Braystones and its neighbour, Nethertown.  Their service was so irregular that I wouldn't be able to revisit them any other way.

The BF, and his Prius, was the solution.  He waited for me in the station car park and whisked me to St Bees in ten minutes.

You might think this is cheating.  I don't.  This is taking advantage of the resources available to me.  If I'd taken a bus, you wouldn't be complaining, would you?  Since I used the railway to arrive or depart from all the stations on the line, it all counts, and one little car journey doesn't invalidate anything as far as I'm concerned.

It meant that I missed out on the delights of St Bees, but from what I saw, that wasn't much of a loss.  The town looked grim faced under the wintry skies, huddled away from the sea and guarded.  A large public school sat up on the hill, the windows lit up against the storm even though it was theoretically mid-April.  I nipped to a public toilet on the front for a pee, and found a group of hikers hovering in the porch: "We're just trying to decide how mad we really are."  St Bees is the start of Wainwright's coast to coast walk, and their packs and thick socks indicated they were going to have a stab; their cowardice at a bit of rain made me think they probably wouldn't get all the way to Robin Hood's Bay.


The rain was getting worse.  I was only going to get wetter and colder.  There was a part of me that secretly hoped the BF would say "never mind all this.  Come back to Birkenhead with me and we'll have beer and pizza for dinner in our nice warm flat."

He drove away without even looking back.  Bastard.
