I didn't realise you had to pay for it though; I thought it was like a shuttle at an airport. My notorious tight fistedness would probably have put a stop to me ever going near it.

Bob's Coppice Walk was at the top of a very large hill which was why I was so keen for a nice sit down when I got to Lye.

Trouble is, of course, councils in Victorian times had money and were allowed to spend it. Now if a council tries to invest in a new office building or library they have a minimal budget and what they do what to spend gets dragged through the papers as over the top and lavish.Scott Willisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02284196034782356946noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8329761583210135212.post-57722542665034834502019-02-26T10:51:11.406+00:002019-02-26T10:51:11.406+00:00Smethwick is pronounced 'Smerrick' by the ...Smethwick is pronounced 'Smerrick' by the locals. Unfortunately most of the other passengers were doing the same. No-one actually used it as a useful piece of transport, as it didn't go anywhere you couldn't walk. Even Waterfront East wasn't that far.

Plus lots of locals regarded the ticket price as little short of scandalous (40p for a single ticket? I'm not paying that!)

The Merry Hill centre is notorious for its traffic congestion ("Merry Hell"), so it would have been brilliant if the monorail had actually linked up Merry Hill to the old railway station (and the railway had been reopened, perhaps for trams), or even if it had been extended to Cradley Heath station. But it never happened.
