You have a colour for services vis Birkenhead North, and a colour for services via Hooton, then a colour for Southport-Hunts Cross and another for services that terminate at Central. (If it were up to me the City Line would be slashed into a load of different colours, because I can't stand it).

The Croydon Tramlink is another one where I lived down the road for years and never bothered to ride it. Though I'm not sure anything justifies going to Croydon.

I'm now looking into hiring a service to take me to London in style. They use a solid grey line for core routes in central areas, but the same shades where they diverge and there's more space.

And Scott - you can still hire a train if you want. Virgin offers both carriages on ordinary services and whole trains for hire - there are often advertisements on their website or onboard magazines, though I don't know how many people take them up on it!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8329761583210135212.post-52566023821747176432011-07-19T13:01:39.364+01:002011-07-19T13:01:39.364+01:00I've looked at putting each branch as a separa...I've looked at putting each branch as a separate line on the network map but it gets very heavy in the city centre of Liverpool. You would have four lines around the loop and three links north to south. It becomes very bulky. Also with the three basic colours green (Wirral) blue (Northern) and red (City) there would be conflict with other media such as timetables and way finding signs. Shades or green, blue or red wouldn't work because "civilians" wouldn't spot the subtle differences.Mark Square Loopsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8329761583210135212.post-89184277257299609192011-07-18T21:27:12.864+01:002011-07-18T21:27:12.864+01:00How bizarre! I always notice it on the train back from uni and there is of course never a person on the platform. I've never understood what exactly it is supposed to serve because the area looks so anti-pedestrian and it's so close to Picadilly (well it feels really close on the train). They were going to close it according to Wiki but there was a successful campaign to keep it open. Don't know why!gottagohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11152621735220067381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8329761583210135212.post-77015360625605056652011-07-18T21:08:44.962+01:002011-07-18T21:08:44.962+01:00London's trams, gliding punctually and niftily...London's trams, gliding punctually and niftily between Wimbledon, Croydon and Beckenham, are almost the only thing worth going south of the river for.Ian Joneshttp://arailwayrunsthroughit.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8329761583210135212.post-21704188699786271862011-07-18T17:41:09.741+01:002011-07-18T17:41:09.741+01:00Maps that show the actual service pattern rather t...Maps that show the actual service pattern rather than the route are fabulous... but passenger poison.

Train passengers hate changing trains. Really, really, *really* hate changing trains. Of course, BR and its successors have never helped by deciding to keep platform numbers a mystery until you arrive and eschewing the cross-platform interchange beloved by our continental superiors.

There's much more willingness to change trams, because they occupy the same slot as buses, rather than trains, in passengers' heads, and bus passengers are oddly undaunted by changes.

If you tell the people of Ormskirk in advance that actually they can't go visit Aunty Flo in Hunts Cross on just one train, many of them either won't go or will drive or will take the 4 buses required - anything to avoid changing and thus the dreaded *missing the train* world-ending scenario. Lying, er, sorry, imply to those who haven't researched the matter that it's direct puts bums on seats, often quite literally at Ormskirk, and the surprise smooth interchange on the Link is quickly forgotten.Jamiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04992989840233745094noreply@blogger.com
